Finding Strength and Courage in Times of Uncertainty

A Reflection on Joshua 1:9

Life often presents us with moments that test our strength and courage. For many, the outcome of an election can stir a wide range of emotions, from hope to disappointment, especially when the stakes feel intensely personal. As the United States inaugurates its new President on January 20, 2025, some may find themselves feeling disappointed or outcast, unsure of what the future holds. In these moments, we can turn to timeless truths found in scripture to anchor our hearts and minds.

One such guiding light is Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

The Call to Strength and Courage

Joshua 1:9 is more than a verse; it’s a divine command and a promise. God spoke these words to Joshua as he stood on the brink of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, a daunting task anxious with uncertainty and potential conflict. Joshua likely felt overwhelmed by the responsibility, just as we might feel overwhelmed when the world around us doesn’t align with our hopes or expectations.

This verse reminds us that strength and courage are not merely traits to muster up on our own. They are qualities we can embody because we trust in God’s presence and authority. No matter the political climate or personal challenges, we are not walking this journey alone.

Pushing Fear and Discouragement Aside

Fear and discouragement often creep in during times of change or perceived loss. It’s natural to feel unsettled when the outcome of an election leaves us questioning the direction of our country or our place within it. Yet, Joshua 1:9 calls us to push these feelings aside. How? By focusing on the assurance that God is with us wherever we go.

This doesn’t mean ignoring our emotions or pretending everything is fine. Instead, it’s about acknowledging our feelings while choosing to trust in God’s plan. Fear may knock at the door, but it doesn’t have to take up residence in our hearts.

Finding Unity and Purpose

Feeling outcast or isolated can be one of the most painful aspects of political or social divisions. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher purpose: to be peacemakers, bridge-builders, and light in the darkness. Our ultimate allegiance is to God’s kingdom, which transcends earthly politics.

In this season, consider how you can channel your energy into acts of kindness, service, and love. Reach out to someone who may feel similarly disheartened, or even someone with a different perspective, and engage in a spirit of empathy and understanding. Strength and courage often manifest in the simple yet profound act of extending grace.

A Prayer for Strength and Courage

If you’re struggling to find hope in this moment, take a few minutes to pray and reflect on Joshua 1:9.

Here is a prayer to guide you:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of Your presence. In times of uncertainty and disappointment, help me to be strong and courageous. Take away my fear and discouragement, fill me with peace that surpasses all understanding. Show me how to be a light in the world and a source of hope for others. Remind me that You are with me wherever I go. Amen.

Moving Forward with Faith

As the nation moves forward, let us remember that our hope is not in human leaders but in the unchanging love and faithfulness of God. Joshua 1:9 serves as a powerful reminder that we are never alone, even in times of sadness or uncertainty. Be strong, be courageous, and trust that God’s plans for you and for our world are good.

May God continues to bless and protect America!

Yours Truly,

MS. G
